For the last six years, Darfur, a region in western Sudan, has been suffering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. After several years of investigation into the crisis, the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Sudan’s president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir, on several counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes. The army colonel came to power in the North African country of Sudan in 1989, through a military coup. Since 1993 he has ruled the country as the de jure and de facto head of state.
