The oceans are the world’s largest life support systems, according to the Marine Conservation Institute. They generate half of the oxygen that we breathe, contain 97 percent of the world’s water and 80 percent of all life on Earth. Yet there is mounting scientific evidence showing that human actions- such as industrial fishing, pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases- are damaging oceans on a scale that Greenpeace International describes as “unimaginable to most people”. For the sake of the future wellbeing of humans and other species, there is an urgent need to find ways of reversing this trend.
