Alongside recent criticisms of her stalwart support of austerity, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has recently come under fire for her environmental policies. Most notably, Merkel’s decision to phase out German nuclear power by 2022 following the nuclear meltdown at Fukushima in March 2011 has been challenged both by German opposition leaders and members of her own party.
