The recent dismissal of North Korea’s top military chief came as a surprise to many in the international community. On July 16, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced that Ri Yong-ho had been relieved of his duties due to illness. The top military chief was replaced by Hyon Hong-chol, a relatively unknown but highly decorated general.
