Even as the United States has wound down its forces in Iraq and plans to begin withdrawal in Afghanistan during the coming year, the global war on terror is not yet over and threats of terrorism are still very real. On August 2, the U.S. closed 19 different consulates and embassies in 17 countries across North Africa and the Middle East. Additionally, the Department of State issued a worldwide travel alert citing, “The continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula.”
