Afghanistan held its parliamentary election on Saturday, September 18, 2010. 2,500 candidates competed for 249 parliamentary seats.(1) The results will reveal whether voters support President Hamid Karzai and his allies or the opposition candidates led by Abdullah Abdullah, Karzai’s main opponent in the 2009 presidential election. Karzai and others declared the election a success despite low voter turnout, violence and allegations of fraud.
