In Istanbul and neighbouring cities, ongoing protests expose the widening rift between the people of Turkey and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Originally a peaceful demonstration opposing the urban regeneration project set to build a shopping mall in the capital’s Gezi Park, the protests are now in response to excessive police violence and the government’s trend towards authoritarianism.
